model?

Postby wrsni » Fri Apr 26, 2013 6:59 am

Good afternoon.

I have just acquired my first MZ and hope to bring it back to full health over the coming weeks but firstly need to ascertain what model it is before I start looking for technical help or parts.

Most notable sign is the sidepanel stickers which say ETZ 251, but the stickers are new and both the previous owners have no knowledge of motorcycles whatsoever so they could have come from anywhere. I have the registration details and it was first registered in November 1990 but unfortunately model type is listed as "unknown". Rear wheel is 16in which seems to point to it indeed being a 251 but capacity is listed as 243 whereas I've read elsewhere that 243 makes it a 250 and the 251 was actually 241cc.

Many of the parts suppliers also list the 251 as being from 93 onwards whereas mine is earlier than that.

Can anyone point me towards anything which might define the model beyond doubt or are we into the era of "parts bin production" when the bikes were put together with whatever was available creating all sorts of weird hybrid type things.

Oh, and should I get a Haynes manual or not?

Thanks in advance.

It's a 251.

There never was a 241cc motor, the cranks and pistons are the same on ETZ250 and ETZ251 engines.

Thanks for that, the capacity thing was the main issue throwing me.

Perils of the internet eh!

Is the MZ book like a factory manual or something?

Yup the proper MZ manual lacks the deliberate errors Haynes loves to throw in just for fun!
