New to the MZ experience!...

Postby deathshells » Tue May 21, 2013 2:58 am

Hello all!
As of yesterday, I have a 1988 ETZ 250! One owner since 1989 and she's in great looking condition really :)
Had a quick go on her up and down the road and it has definitely been an interesting ride! Everything's sharp and she starts on first kick from cold and she seems to run like a dream.
As I said though... I'm new to all of this and hoping I haven't bitten off more than I can chew :P

Just thought I'd throw a quick hi out, and the only question I've really got is what to look out for with her! What breaks, what wears and what am I gonna have to keep a close eye on :P

Also, considering its only had one owner since 1989, anyone recognise the plate, ending with "PUU". Silver bike and the (heavily modified) haynes manual and service book it came with have a hand written notes all the way through!

the only scary thing about this bike is that haynes manual
most of the english guys call it a book of lies so do pay attention to the factory manual
and the added notes

Congratulations. MZs are tough bikes and it sounds like you've got a good one. One thing I always do on getting a new MZ is to drain and refill the gearbox so I know its good. Also might be an idea to change the brake fluid and check the pads and that both pistons in the caliper move freely. Only other thing I can think of is to check the chain for broken rollers. Some chains seemed prone to self destruction, whilst others go on for even.
Then ride the wheels off it, and if anything goes wrong come back and ask for help!

@David: I had heard (from reading a few posts around no the forum) that the Haynes manual was to be almost avoided at all costs :P I'd definitely pay attention to the hand written notes should I ever need to change/poke something about :P
In the UK myself :)

@Therealche: Thanks for the tips! The oils, fuel and plug have all been renewed about a week or two ago, so I think I should be all good to go there :) Rode it into work today and it's definitely an interesting bike to ride! Last bike was a Kawasaki GPZ500, so going back to a 2-stroker with that beautiful smell and noise has been fantastic... and a culture shock :P
Brakes seem to be very strong and have plenty of bite to them, almost a bit too much really, don't know when these were last changed though, might have a quick filter through the reciepts that came with it!
I'll make sure to give the chain the once over though, thanks for the tips, and I'll try to be gentle with her! She does have a suprising bite though, so no doubt I'll probably play with that a little bit from time to time :P The induction noise is beautiful though.. love it!
