Hi, I've just picked up my first MZ project, a 1977 250 partly dismantled and not used for many years. There are two incomplete engines, one with vertical head fins, one horizontal. Am I right in thinking that the horizontal fin engine will be a 5 speed? Are parts interchangeable (not the gears I know), I'm thinking particularly of the cylinder and piston?

I'd like to use the horizontal fin engine but it's piston is missing.

The TS250 ( 4-speed) and the TS250/1 ( 5-speed) use the same cylinder and piston so cant see a problem swapping them over ( unless I've forgotten something major!)

make sure you have papers in order....so when its done you do not have problems getting it a licence plate....

Thanks, I'll take the cylinder off the spare engine and check. It has a UK registration and engine number changes aren't a problem here.

Are all horizontal fin head engines five speed?

Yes.the horizontal fin head was introduced with the TS250/1 and continued through the ETZs

paper work here is a pain

go to the office and get a list of what you need to get a plate and title ...

go back 2 days later and they just have to have some thing that is NOT on your list ..so more time wasted

Registrations in UK are centralised at an office in Swansea, Wales, placed there because it was an area of high unemployment. Most things are done by post or on line, or you can phone them but that is tedious and expensive. They closed their local offices and I don't think Swansea encourage visitors.

If you change an engine for the same type you just advise the new number. If you change a frame they may decide you've built a new bike and that's much more complicated!
