TS250/1 Idling Speed

I have adjusted the idling/tick over speed to about 1600RPM, The spec. sheet suggests 850RPM. Is this realistic? Many thanks.

Unrealistic I would say, mine doesn't really tick over at all unless it's set ridiculously high. I don't find it a problem as I'm not often stuck in traffic or waiting at lights.

All 2t MZ's are speced to idle at 1,200-1,300.

Mine idle around that nicely, Sometimes a little higher, perhaps 1,700 or even 2,000 in neutral but. In gear, 1,300
I find that a lot of things change the idle, dependant on load of the engine. Even a slight gradient in a hill (or having the bike on the centre stand can change my idle speed quite drastically). Indicators, headlamp being on (you can definately feel the lights effecting the engine), even brake light can change it. In my opinion.

back in 1965 to 1975 the fellows used to idle the 500cc /600cc bmw motors at very low speeds
all it did was starve the engine for oil and ruin the cranks

The factory manual (for ETZ 250 though) does not specify idle speed at all. They describe a procedure where the idle is correctly set when certain engine behavior is achieved.

With the pilot 2½ turn open & the bypass 3½ turn open, my 251 idles to my liking at around 1650 RPM. That's on the mechanical rev counter, which I'm not sure is very accurate. Haynes specify 1200 RPM for it.

Edit: this thread caused me to have a look at the idling of my ETZ251, which has a BVF 30 N 3-1. By closing the bypass a little further it does idle slower, and it can idle at around the 850 RPM you mention, in a stable fashion (doesn't miss a beat). But I don't really like it, the pick-up on the throttle is then sluggish, and most importantly: the entire engine vibrates up & down in the rubber. So that must load/bend the exhaust. I went back to about 1500 RPM.

I think anything below 1200 and the transition between idle and throttle load is a little fluffy. 1,200 seems to be the lowest reasonable point where the throttle response is still crisp, rolling on. Perhaps as a way to prevent spark plug oil contamination.
