Fitting Fork Tubes the easy way.

Here's a neat trick to make fitting fork tubes (stanchions) easy.
Rather than splay out the yoke gaps by hammering in a wedge or levering with a bar or screwdriver....simply insert a piece of steel and screw in the bolt from the front as shown. This way you have complete control without the likelihood of the lever dropping out or damaging the finish on the yoke...

Thanks chaps for the feedback....By the way, this method can be used (of course) to remove the fork tubes when usually, because of corrosion, even greater clearance is required. Obviously lots of penetrating oil should be applied in advance to soften the rust. Don't overdo the gap stretching though...

As a side point...I'm getting on really well with the ETZ 250 rebuild but had so much domestic work to do as well, I just haven't had the time to join your good selves here on this forum. Photos of some stages of the re-build will be posted at some time not too far off.

Well spotted Puffs...yes new stanchions... The old ones were severely corroded but the lower covered section of each was perfect with little wear. I came up with what I thought was a brilliant way of covering the upper rusty section and was looking forward to showing it on here as I'm sure many owners would find it a relatively cheap and easy visual improvement to the tidiness of their bike. After buying all the materials I then back-tracked on my thoughts, bit the bullet so to speak and shelled out the enormous cost for new ones....simply because in my mind I'm trying to restore this lovely bike to as near perfection as I can...

Anyway even though I didn't do what I intended I shall show the way to do it as soon as I can with photos....watch this space....or another one...
