Wanting toplan my 2006 hoiday, and torn between the East coast of the US and New Zealand.

I want to purchase a cheap bike, run it around for a few weeks,then sell it/scrap it. Not wanting to pay much, and not really concerned what the bike is. Renting is just far too expensive, and I enjoy not worrying about scratching/crashing a bike I own

Only bugbear is insurance. Is it obtainable easily enough-and what about registration (Pink slip?)-do I need a permanent address to register?

Here in the UK you have to register your bike with the National Licencing peole, and buy compulsory insurance-is it the same elsewhere?

Don't want to look forward to going somewhere, then find out that buying & insuring a bike is not possible.

Have you considered the possibility of doing a "bike swap"? You fly over here and take my Baghira for a few weeks, then I fly to the UK and take your Baghira for a European tour. Just an idea we could talk about. I too am planning my 06 trip. I have rode Spain, Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. I am thinking of doing either Mexico again (it's a big country,lots left I haven't seen) or perhaps rent a bike in southeast Asia. What areas would you recommend riding in Europe?

If you are considering comming to europe, it is difficult to give recommendations as to what parts to vivit. For views and twisty roads then Wales, Scotland and the lake district of england are good. As are any of the mountainous regions of the mainland. Switzarland, Austria, southern France, Norway and Bulgaria spring to mind. Every area in Europe has its good points, with senery and atmosphere changing rapidly.
I have tried geting insurance for an American friend before and it is difficult. It is possible though, my insrance company will allow other riders on a policy, but the policy must be for one bike only. My policy is a multi bike one and they will not ad other names to it, not even for a couple of days.

as far as getting insurance, they don't ask too many questions, and some states don't require insurance on motorcycles (here in washington, you do not have to insure a MC).

I too would trade use of motorcycles with you, I am comming over to england next year, and wan't to go on a ride with my 3 brothers that live in the UK.

Anyone coming over to the UK will be welcome to "swap" bikes with me. Like Keith, I have a multibike policy (Baggi Sport x2 , Leonardo scooter( ) and an R1 "project" ), but not checked on adding a rider, but i am sure my insurers (ebikeinsurance) allow it.

Where abouts in the UK are your brothers?

And as for roads-there are hundreds of miles of fanatastic roads in the UK. Very, very few of them are near me!!!

Still, London is just an hour away for commuting holiganisum

most of my family is in the Devon area (tiverton), and I have one brother in the midlands (leicester city) (sp)

should be over next year. both brothers have bikes, one has a honda RC51, and the other a GSXR.

I have several European friends who I have offered to borrow my bikes should they ever want to come and tour the States. I think the "Bike Swap" thing is a good idea and I've always been willing to do it myself if I felt confident in the other riders. I've never looked into the legal and insurance logistics of it though.
