You are right the ignition cannot be adjusted. Therefore I would check the carbs are set up right. If it is running weak then the engine would overheat. Also this overheating may be the cause of you high fuel consumption.

Working on theory, rather than a strong knowledge of your paticular model of bike, I would try a few things. Firstly, how much oil is it burning - can you see a blue coming out of the exhaust or is it just using more oil than you were expecting?

Have you checked the condition of the plug? Is it a nice brown or a horrible white, or a soggy black?

White is a lean mixture, black is too much fuel.

Is the exhaust glowing from the heat (look at it in pitch black) or is it just a bit warm (they all do that, its the hottest part of the exhaust!)?

Hows the performance - is it pinking under a heavy load (another sign that it could be the ignition)

Hope this tests help you find what the problem could be.

A strange one. I would hazard a guess that either the fueling or ignition is out

I
How long (mileage wise) has it been getting hot?? I would agree that you check the plug, and also drain the carbs, and put plenty of carb cleaner through them (could be a simple blockage) to see if that cures it-quicker than a full carb strip.

Also finsd a nice friendly Yamaha dealer (I believe such a thing exists somewhere in the world) and see if they can let you borrow a TDM cdi box. These do let the bike rev a bit more, but iof yours is faulty, then the swap will confirm it. CDi's on ebay go for anything between £25-£50 which ois a huge saving on the MZ/Yamaha price for a new one.

Incidentally, my 30,000 mile Sport has consumed around 750ml of oil in between changes in 6,000 miles, and boy, does that get ragged everywhere!
