The 20th anniversary of the Yakuza: Like a Dragon series is fast approaching, and the beloved franchise is preparing for a year of celebrations. A new video from Masayoshi Yokoyama, the executive producer of the series, has revealed some details about how the team behind the games plans to mark this milestone.

The Like a Dragon series debuted in 2005 on the PlayStation 2, initially released in the west under the title Yakuza. While it found immediate success in Japan, the series faced a rocky start in Western markets, struggling to gain traction. However, Yakuza 0, the prequel to the series, helped turn the tide, offering a fresh entry point that introduced players to an engaging story, memorable side quests, and a vast library of games to explore.

As the franchise celebrates its 19th anniversary, Yokoyama shared that the studio will be marking the upcoming 20th anniversary with various events and announcements throughout the year. In addition, there will be an increased focus on merchandising and global content, as the studio works to better serve fans worldwide.

Leading up to the anniversary, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza is set to release in Hawaii in February, featuring legendary ex-Yakuza Goro Majima in a new adventure where he embarks on a rampage across the islands with amnesia. While RGG has been tight-lipped about future titles beyond this release, the 20th anniversary is expected to bring significant developments.

One of the most anticipated announcements is likely to be a follow-up to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. Given the success of the franchise's 10th anniversary, which saw the release of Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami (a remake of the first game), fans are hopeful that the 20th anniversary might also bring remakes of earlier entries, especially Yakuza 3, which many feel is overdue for a rework.

Additionally, RGG has hinted at the possibility of a new version of the engine used for the Like a Dragon series, which originally debuted during the franchise's 10th anniversary. With all these exciting developments on the horizon, it’s clear that 2025 will be a significant year for Like a Dragon fans.
