A new study from civil engineers and earth systems scientists at the University of California, Davis and Stanford University suggests that common construction materials, such as concrete and plastic, could store billions of tons of carbon dioxide. Published on January 10 in Science, the study highlights the potential of incorporating carbon sequestration into buildings, offering a promising avenue to help meet global greenhouse gas reduction targets.
"The potential is pretty large," said Elisabeth Van Roijen, the study's lead author and a former graduate student at UC Davis.
Carbon sequestration aims to capture carbon dioxide, either from industrial emissions or the atmosphere, convert it into a stable form, and store it in a way that prevents it from contributing to climate change. While traditional methods like underground injection or deep ocean storage face practical challenges and environmental concerns, the new study explores an alternative: using materials already in mass production to sequester carbon.
Van Roijen, alongside Sabbie Miller, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Davis, and Steve Davis from Stanford University, calculated the potential of storing carbon in commonly used building materials, including concrete, asphalt, plastics, wood, and brick. Together, these materials account for more than 30 billion tons of production annually worldwide.

The study examined several carbon-storing techniques, such as integrating biochar (a byproduct of waste biomass) into concrete, using artificial rocks as carbon-loaded aggregates for concrete and asphalt, and developing bio-based plastics and asphalt binders from renewable sources instead of fossil fuels. Some of these technologies are in early research stages, while others are ready for implementation.
Among the findings, researchers identified that while bio-based plastics have a high carbon storage capacity by weight, the most significant potential lies in carbonated aggregates used in concrete. Since concrete is the most widely used building material, with over 20 billion tons produced annually, even modest carbon storage in concrete could have a substantial global impact.
"If feasible, a little bit of storage in concrete could go a long way," Miller said. The team estimates that if just 10% of the world's concrete aggregate production were carbonated, it could absorb one gigaton of CO2.
The materials required for these processes are primarily low-value waste products like biomass, which could not only reduce carbon emissions but also foster economic growth and support a circular economy. While further technological development is needed to validate certain methods, many of these approaches are poised for immediate adoption, Miller noted.
Van Roijen, who is now a researcher at the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory, led this work with support from Miller's National Science Foundation CAREER grant.
