Another new arrival...

Postby Gromit » Mon Jan 16, 2006 10:08 am

Hi all,

Really glad to at last find a forum which deals with one of my favourite pastimes - my MZ's :)

At the moment, the only Zschopau beasts which occupy my garage are a trio of ringtingers, which have to keep company with my 4 month-old Harley Dyna. However, every time I look at/think of one of the new 1000's (ST in particular) I begin to get an itch which may well need scratching sometime in the future. It would be rather nice to have a representative from MZ's most modern era to keep the little strokers company :)

Looking forward to reading posts/contributing to the forum in the future.

Best to all,

Richard.

Consider it done...

:)

The 250 isn't on the road at the moment as it needs a few bits doing - the crank seals are shot for starters (changing them on a 4-speeder is a lot more tricky than on the later Supa5 as they're inboard) and the fork seals are leaking badly. May stick the Supa5 motor in it though as that bike is in bits - well, most of it is residing in boxes to be honest.

The 301's a great workhorse - I'm only its 2nd owner in nearly 14 years and it's only covered itro 10000 miles. When I got it 4 years ago the crank seals were knackered through lack of use (the bike had stood for something like 5 years) but I just got Martin at Burwin's* in London to re-build the motor for me. It now runs absolutely beautifully - hard to believe how smooth it is. Goes great and will hold 75-80mph all day.

*Martin's probably one of the best MZ race engine builders in the UK - what he doesn't know about these little bikes isn't worth knowing. :)

very nice!!!! I wish I could find a 250 around here. I had a 74 RD350, full cafe (actual race bike from the late 70's) that I added lights to and street rode. Man that was fun. nothing like a 50 HP 2-stroke hit yanking the front end off the ground :-D

seals

Postby DAVID THOMPSON » Tue Jan 17, 2006 11:07 pm

2 smokers are bad about the bearings wearing fast from low oiling
and this makes the crank seals wear fast from the crank slopping around

when redoing one use the best bearings and seals you can find

i ran a yamaha YM1 305cc 1966 125,000 in 6 years
great bike just had to hang at the back of the pack so i did not cover the
fellow riders in oil (i used extra oil in gastank plus bike had autolube pump) real smoker but a good runner
