New 125 Fun X owner wants to convert to dual sport...

Hello all!

I just picked up my new 125 Fun X yesterday and I love it. It is a 2002 model I got from a former dealer that he used as his personal trail bike... Lucky for me he was an old man didn't ride much and the bike has very few miles on it (i'd say less than 300) and in near perfect condition..

I'm interested and converting it to street legal like the SX... Has anyone done this? Have any advice?

I can get universal kits for about $400. Or I can buy parts separately.... Or, can I get the parts from MZ... Or does anyone have some parts from a wrecked bike or any that they don't want??

If you had a new bike what would you do first to check it out and make sure it was in good condition etc??

check the water in the battery and also see if it has some thing besides the oem battery as the oem ones were crap

oil filter is kn-151
or same as f650 bmw

i use shell rotella t sae 15w-40 oil

I have emailed Phil but no reply yet...

The batery is aftermarket (yokohamasha or something :) ) I'll check it when I get home. I will also check the water and change the oil. One question though, why Rotella T? I use the same oil in my Ford diesel truck... I've never had a problem with it but just curious why you like it for these bikes?

I have been talking to BSA Regal this week and Phil has had some time out sick (Monday to Weds this week) and is now on holiday until next Tuesday (its a bank holiday here on Monday). I am sure he will answer your emails early next week.

the oil

1 like you i already have it on hand
2 no super slick add on's to make wet clutch slip
3 find it in lots of stores or truck stops
4 cheaper than oil at MC shops and just as good
5 i am very cheap i turn the bottles upside down when filling my other cars and let the cling in them run into a 1.2 L jug
when its full i have an oil change for the bike ....my friend next door has
2 trucks that use it and i get the cling from his bottles as well.. the rt125 gets several oil changes a year

don't forget to tell him to order a spare starter clutch dave :D
if the laws in your state allow you to convert a dirt bike to street legal, then no problem. does the title say off road only?

the Baja designs kit is nice and simple, it has all the wiring contained in the headlamp assy, and is pretty easy to wire up. worth the money if you can't do it yourself.

Dave, I wouldn't use this kind of oil. This oil is developed for cars and it's quite different to a oil , which is produced for motorbikes. A motorbike motor is not a comparison to a motor of an American Truck!
Don't forget, that oil does lubricate the clutch and also the gearbox . The rpm are much higher (and the loads for the oil are stronger) than in a car-engine, so a motorbike needs a special oil with special additives. It really helps to give your engine a longer life. We have mail-order houses, which are specialized for motorbike-parts. They sell oil from well-known manufacturers under their own name. High quality - low price. But I don't know the situation in the US, because I've never been there.

i used yamaha oil till about a year ago and about every 9 months
i would blow out the starter free wheel clutch

i started using the rotella last year on a new freewheel and
i have made it one full year and it still has the same free wheel

i will see how long it goes
the r90s bmw went 479,000 miles in 28 years on it and no botton end work

I will get the title in the mail in a couple of weeks... So, I will not know for sure about that until then... I did call the state police and they said I could convert it as long as the bike meets all the inspection requirements.
I don't really care if I can't go street legal cause that was not my original intentions when I bought it but I would love it if I could...

I think I may have to get new tires because the German brand dirt tires Seem to be WAY out of balance or something??? Seems like the front tire is out of round when on pavement (it kind of "lopes")... It's not noticable on the trails. Maybe it has a flat spot from sitting so much? The tires are new. They stil have paint lines and flashing! They do say "DOT N6" on them though? Does that mean the are street legal?

As far as oil goes what would be some other choices or recomendations?

I've looked at the baja kits they are the ones that cost so much. I think they look good but I would like to get MZ front light, gauges, and ignition if I could... I hate the fact there is no key for this bike... It is too easy to steal!

do like i do

i use a latching relay and hide a push button some where
that runs off the rear stop light

i step on rear brake and push hidden button relay makes ignition come on
kill button cuts power to relay to kill bike

been doing it like that for years

DOT = "Department of Transportation". The last part of the number behind DOT is the date of birth of the tyre.
For example:

I knew What DOT means... What is the N6? Is that a rating? DOT usually means approved for road use... like on helments?

The tires are "MEFO SPORT Made in Germany"... They are OEM.

Sorry! I have no idea, what N6 means. I only know that DOT is an indication that the tire corresponds to the American regulations.

CHECK IT OUT... ME AND THE BIKE ABOUT TO START THE ARKANSAS TRANS-AMERICA TRAIL!!! I COMPLETED IT IN 14 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES OF RIDING OVER TWO DAYS! 435 MILES. THE MZ WAS PERFECT! :-D
