I think the Americans call it soccer to stop them getting confused with American football. Strange game, called football, but you pick up the ball and run with it. Bit like Rugby really, but with body armour to stop the players getting hurt to much

Yes. There wouldn't be any confusion here, to call it football, because rugby's always called rugby.
But 'soccer' couldn't have come from the americans, is what I'm saying; this is the (or used to be) the "Last Outpost".
I see that they wear a lot more padding and stuff in rugby now than they used to. Much like bike stuff. Amour in jackets and so on is normal now, but we never even thought of it, 'back in the day'.
I hate rugby. And I was forced to go to school on Saturdays to watch it. With a blazer and a basher, in subtropical summer weather. Actually I only went a few times - it was better to get caned on Monday morning.
